We were very excited around the Doghouse when Salted made its way onto the newstands. Now that is has spent a day on the coffee table it has been fully thumbed through. Multiple times. All we can say... Can't wait for next month. It is a surf magazine for women. Surfing first and foremost. About time.

I have found myself perusing the interwebs recently looking for amusing animated shorts and clips. Here is my latest find. The Colors of EVil from Phillip Simon on Vimeo. This past weekend was Stand Up Paddle Surfari's first annual Boston Tea Paddle. Consisting of a series of races, relays and good times this event helped bring SUP to attention in Beantown. With races from the East Coast and as far away as Oregon there were exciting moments and some wind... Lot's of wind. Paddlers were in fine form with Dani Schmidt winning the women's 5 mile Elite and the 9-mile run, Dan Gavere from scored first in the 5 and second in the 9 trading places with Will Rich who scored second in the 5 and first in the 9, both on 14 foot boards. Patrick Brommel took first in the 12'6" class with John O'Hara taking second (also took third in the 9) and Werner's own Danny Mongno taking third.
Christian and the lads and ladies from Surfari put on a good event to showcase the sport. Next year it can only get better. It was a good thing I was already started when I read this! It seems that the latest hipster thing in Portland, OR to do is to put your advertising on the anti-splash mats in urinals. This was not the only one seen while in the City of Roses. The other one had the New York Yankees logo on it. Still can't tell whether or not it is a good thing or a bad thing. Still being from Boston it helped my aim a bit. Enough with the bathroom humor. Portland, although quite rainy this time around, was a great place to wonder. With the multiple breweries, Voodoo Donuts and green spaces interrupting the city it made for a fun week catching up with friends and co-workers. For now though I will stick with my Portland for when I need a little escape. Not Flying required. Older Cover A well respected surfer Shaun Tomson wrote "Surfer's Code: 12 Simple Lessons for Riding through Life" as a guide for living life and getting the most out of it. A good read for those small moments, this book moves pretty quick and gives something to think about when not reading the book. For those not in a hurry to read a whole book. The chapters are labeled according to each of the lessons. 1. I will never turn my back on the ocean 2. I will paddle around the impact zone 3. I will take the drop with commitment 4. I will never fight a rip tide 5. I will always paddle back out 6. I will watch out for other surfers 7. There will always be another wave 8. I will always ride into shore 9. I will pass along my stoke 10. I will catch a wave everyday 11. All surfers are joined by one ocean 12. I will honor the sport of Kings Lessons to learn whether they take a minute or a lifetime. In 2009 I traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa, 300 miles from the ocean. While talking with people I was meeting they asked of my interests I mentioned surfing, everyone's response " Shaun Tomson was the World Champion in surfing back in the '70's." It was quite interesting, ask someone in the States who Kelly Slater is and they will most likely scratch their head. Weird world we live in. It is not every Sunday that finds you down on the banks of the Mystic River in Somerville, MA. Today was a special occasion, The Mystic River Herring Run. This is a combo 5k race and a 3, 9 or 12 mile paddle race. Was there running or paddling coming from the Stranded Dog? Oh no, strictly there to watch the action.
A quick break down of the SUP racers. During the 5k Brian Cullinan came in second and then hoped on a SUP from Banh Pho Surfboards to take on the 12 mile paddle, his first SUP race ever. Matt Files hoped on to compete in the 9 mile putting in a strong time. The action of the day was between friends Patrick Broemmel, head shaper and owner of Banh Pho and Will Rich, SUP the Coast paddler and Speedboard USA test pilot. Nose to tail these two crossed the line, each on specially designed SUP boards. Will took first with Pat taking a strong second. For more on the boards check out www.speedboardusa.com www.banhpho.com For more on the SUP racers check out some photos on Facebook. It seems that the past few weeks have been a blur. Getting miles under the paws while traveling around New England has been the main activity. Negative side, lots of waves have gone by while being stranded somewhere else. Positive side... Where to start?!?!! Meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends throw in some stand up paddling on the lake seeing a side of VT not seen before. Everything has been great. With all the good food New England has not left this dog hungry, and it has grown the inner hunger to bring some stranded fun to everyone.
Look to see some type of contest to pop up as the weather gets warmer. Also look back to see some footage of a beautiful wedding shot a couple weekends ago. Soo excited. Tired of hearing people through that phrase out after just about any comment? The only way to make it better is to drink a pint or two of it at The Perfect Wife in Manchester, VT. That’swhatshesaid is their very own special beer from Long Trail Brewery. What is that? A great beer that matches great with their burger, and for another add-on throw on some bacon and crispy fried onions. Add some great live music and it was a great dinner on the road.
Back to business. While being on the road the past couple of weeks a desire to do some work to the site has arisen. It is not going to be a great overhaul to the site, just some Spring cleaning. Check back soon to see what has happened. If you can't wait that long send a note. We would love to hear from you! Last night I met up with some old friends at the Space Gallery in Portland, ME. After great conversation over margaritas with Ashley we wandered over to the gallery for the showing of Splinters by Adam Pesce. The guys at Grain Surfboards hosted the event which had a great turnout. The movie, however, exceeded all expectations. (See Movie Reviews) If you have the chance catch this film and see how surfing has taken on a whole new meaning for some of the locals of Papua New Guinea. You will not be disappointed.
